Handmade Felt Fabric

I now have mission in life! It's to dispel all the old notions about felt. It doesn't have to be thick and uncomfortable to wear. Nor is it the flimsy craft felt that we were given in the 3rd grade.

Using custom designed tools and craftsmen felting techniques, Longbranch Fiber Farm specializes in handmade laminated felt fabric using alpaca fiber and silk chiffon. Fabric is available by the yard and custom orders, and measures 35" to 38" wide, up to 4 yards long. Felt is available in light, medium and custom weights.

Alpaca fiber is a renewable resource that is harvested by giving each alpaca a thorough hair cut each year.

Felted fabric will stretch where there is tension. There is no elasticity to the product so, once it is stretched it will not bounce back to the original shape. If you are making clothing, keep in mind, designs that are close fitting may stretch out at the knees, elbows or seat for example.

Wash felted fabric by soaking in warm/cool water with mild soap and no agitation. If it receives too much agitation, it will shrink or the shape may be permanently altered. Soak it in a rinse bath with water that is the same temperature as the wash. Roll it in a towel to remove water and dry flat. You may use a steam iron on silk setting.

Due to the variability of shrinkage during the felting process, all measurments vary. All felt is fulled and steam pressed, ready to be cut and sewn.
